# Mahjong joker rules

In American mahjong, a joker can stand in for any tile in a set of 3 or more: a pung, kong or quint. Jokers can never be used in a pair or as a single tile, and a discarded joker can't be called.

There are 8 jokers in a set. They are the most useful tiles in the game, so it helps to know every rule about them.

## Where you can use a joker

A joker can take the place of any tile in a pung (3 alike), a kong (4 alike) or a quint (5 alike). You can use more than one joker in the same set.

Tiles: 7 Bam, 7 Bam, Joker | East, East, Joker, Joker | 2 Crak, 2 Crak, 2 Crak, 2 Crak, Joker

A quint always needs at least one joker, because there are only four of each tile. The one exception is flowers: there are 8 flowers, so five flowers make a quint with no joker.

## Where you can't use a joker

Tiles: 5 Dot, Joker | Joker

- In a pair. Both tiles of a pair must be real and matching.
- As a single tile. That includes each tile of a year like 2026, or a line of winds like NEWS.
- In hands made only of singles and pairs. Those hands have no sets of 3, so they can't use jokers at all.

This is why pairs matter so much when you choose a hand. You need the real tiles.

## Discarded jokers

If a player discards a joker, no one can call it. It stays in the discards. Because it can't be called, a joker is a safe discard, but it is rarely worth giving one up.

## Swapping for a joker

If a joker sits in an exposed set (a set laid face up after a call) on any rack, you can take it. Put the real tile it stands for into the set, and the joker is yours. This is called a joker swap. Some players call it a joker exchange or redeeming a joker.

Tiles: 4 Crak, 4 Crak, Joker | 4 Crak | 4 Crak, 4 Crak, 4 Crak

### The rules for a swap

- Only on your turn, after you draw or call a tile, and before you discard.
- Any exposed set works: yours or another player's.
- You need the exact tile the joker stands for. Same number and same suit.
- Pairs never hold jokers, so there is nothing to swap from a pair.
- After swapping, you still discard as usual.

Say what you are doing as you do it, like "Swapping a 4 Crak for the joker". That way everyone knows what happened.

## Jokerless hands

A winning hand with no jokers is jokerless. Every payment for it doubles. The exception is a hand made only of singles and pairs, which can't use jokers in the first place, so it doesn't get the extra double.

Going jokerless on purpose is rarely worth it for a beginner. Use your jokers and win. See [mahjong scoring](https://learnmahjongquick.com/guides/mahjong-scoring) for the numbers.

## Tips for playing jokers

- Hold on to jokers. Each one can finish a set for you.
- Use jokers in pungs and kongs, and build pairs from real tiles.
- Watch other racks. If someone exposes a set with a joker, note which tile you would need to take it.
- Before you discard a tile, check whether you could use it later to take a joker.
- Exposing jokers gives other players a chance to take them. That is part of the game, so expose when it helps you finish.

## Questions

**How many jokers are in an American mahjong set?**

Eight. If a set has fewer, it was made for a different style of mahjong, or it is missing tiles.

**Can you use a joker in a pair in mahjong?**

No. Jokers can only be used in sets of 3 or more. A pair must be two real tiles.

**Can you pick up a discarded joker?**

No. A joker that has been discarded can't be called by anyone.

**When can you swap for a joker?**

On your turn, after you draw or call a tile, and before you discard. You put the matching real tile into an exposed set and take the joker. Then you discard as usual.

**Can you take a joker from your own exposed set?**

Yes. You can swap from any exposed set, including your own, as long as you have the exact tile it stands for.
