# How to host a mahjong night

To host a mahjong night, you need one table and one set of tiles with racks for every four guests. Each player needs a card. Add easy food and quiet music. The rest is about helping new players feel comfortable.

Here is how to set it up, and how to teach friends who have never played.

## How many people to invite

Mahjong is a game for four. Invite in fours: four guests for one table, eight for two. If you have five, players can take turns sitting out a hand, which is also a nice way to watch and learn.

Each table needs its own set of tiles. If you only own one set, ask a guest to bring theirs.

## What you need

- A square table that seats four comfortably.
- A full American mahjong set: 152 tiles, four racks and two dice.
- A card for each player. Use the card your group plays with, or print our [House Card](https://learnmahjongquick.com/american-mahjong-card).
- A soft mat or cloth to quiet the tiles.
- A scorecard and pencil, or chips, for keeping score.
- A cheat sheet for each new player.
- Side tables or trays for drinks, so nothing spills on the tiles.

Our [printables](https://learnmahjongquick.com/printables) include a beginner cheat sheet, a scorecard and a host checklist, each on its own page. If you are still shopping, our [gear page](https://learnmahjongquick.com/gear) lists sets and accessories, and [how to choose a mahjong set](https://learnmahjongquick.com/guides/how-to-choose-a-mahjong-set) explains what to look for.

## Setting the table

Put the mat down first, then a rack and a card at each seat. Leave the tiles face down in the middle so the first hand can start quickly. Make sure the light is good. Players read small corner numbers all evening, and a dim room tires everyone out.

Give each player a little elbow room. Racks are long, and the wall needs space in the middle.

Tiles: Flower, Flower, Flower | Red Dragon | Joker. A few tiles set out on the table give guests something to look at when they arrive.

## Food and drink

Tiles get handled constantly, so choose food that keeps hands clean.

- Bite-sized and not greasy: crackers and cheese, cut vegetables, small sandwiches, cut fruit.
- Serve food before play or during a break, away from the game table.
- Keep drinks on side tables, with coasters and napkins nearby.
- Put a small bowl of something simple, like nuts or chocolate, within reach of each pair of seats.

## Music and mood

Keep music low enough that players can hear each discard named. Instrumental music works well: jazz, bossa nova, or a soft classical playlist. Players need to focus during a hand and like to chat between hands, so a calm room helps.

Fresh flowers on a side table are a nice touch.

## Teaching friends who have never played

New players learn fastest by playing, with a little help. A few ways to make the first night easy:

- Send them the [beginner's guide](https://learnmahjongquick.com/guides/how-to-play-american-mahjong) or our free lessons a few days before.
- Start with the tiles and sets. Point out jokers and flowers, and explain that there are no runs.
- Show the card and read two or three lines together. See [how to read a mahjong card](https://learnmahjongquick.com/guides/how-to-read-a-mahjong-card).
- Play the first hand with racks open, so everyone can see and help each other.
- Play only the first round of the Charleston to start.
- Keep score on paper, not with money, for the first few games.
- Let new players take their time. A slow game is fine.

## A sample evening

| Time | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| First 20 minutes | Arrive, drinks, food, a look at the tiles |
| Next 15 minutes | A practice hand with racks open |
| About 1 hour | Two or three real hands |
| Break | More food and a stretch |
| About 1 hour | More hands, then pay up |

Two to three hours is a comfortable length for most groups.

## Making it a regular night

Most groups play on the same day each week or month, so it becomes part of everyone's routine. Agree on house rules early, such as whether to play the second Charleston and how to keep score, and write them down. Our [etiquette guide](https://learnmahjongquick.com/guides/mahjong-etiquette) has a few habits that keep a regular table friendly.

## Questions

**How many people do you need for a mahjong night?**

Four per table. Invite in groups of four, or let a fifth player take turns sitting out a hand.

**What food should I serve at a mahjong party?**

Bite-sized food that isn't greasy, served away from the game table. Players handle tiles all night, so clean hands matter.

**How do I teach mahjong to friends?**

Start with the tiles, sets and jokers, read a few lines of the card together, then play a first hand with racks open. Keep the first games free of money and pressure.

**How long does a mahjong night last?**

Two to three hours suits most groups. That is time for food, a practice hand and several real hands.
